Gwang-Ju
Gwangju is located in the South western area of Korea and is the
administrative capital of the Jeolla NamDo providence.
Geography and History:
The city is the largest in the Jeolla namdo region, and is the fifth
largest in South Korea with a population of 1,200,000.
Historically, Gwangju was also called "Mujinju" in the three kingdom
period, while it was ruled by Baekje. When unified Shilla emerged, the
name of the city changed to "Muju".
The present-day name, Gwangju, which means "The City of Light," was
first used in A.D. 940, after the Goryo Dynasty was founded. Some of
the Modern History Highlights include:
1929 The Gwangju Student Independence Movement occurs
1949 Gwangju-eup changes to Gwangju-shi (city)
1980 The Gwangju Democratic Uprising occurs
1986 Becomes Gwangju Municipal City
1995 Becomes Gwangju Metropolitan City
